Ever wondered how they became so popular ?

Ah Netflix! A service many of you probably use at least once a day, whether it is to watch that newly released episode of The Crown, or to rewatch Friends for the hundredth time.

Unfortunately it’s a weekday’s evening, and you ran out of things to watch. You start scrolling through their app to find a binge-worthy TV show or a dramatic movie, and then a thought crosses your mind.

What’s their strategy when releasing new content? Do they target a specific audience? How international is their catalogue?

Before going into deeper thoughts, let’s find out!

Who's watching ?

Think twice before endlessly scrolling down and hoping to find what you’re looking for, Netflix’s catalogue is enormous. Next thing you know it’ll be time for bed, we warned you!

If you’ve ever wondered why there are much more movies than TV shows, don’t forget the streaming service started out as an online DVD-rental in the United States.

Chances are you probably do not live there but still can access the platform. That’s because in 2010, they started expanding their services to different regions of the world. Are all parts of the world watching the same anglophone content? Definitely not.

Monthly trends

You probably know Netflix plans their releases way ahead, and that’s no secret. What you might not know, however, is that there are months during which they tend to release more, or less content than usual.

Number of movies and TV show releases per month

Cultural expansion

Netflix had to adapt its catalogue to offer content in numerous languages. Sit back, press play and watch the content’s languages participate in a (quite unfair) race. While English is far ahead, notice how some languages lose in popularity.

International expansion

We mentioned it earlier, Netflix gradually expanded its services to numerous countries. With a few exceptions, it is safe to say that they’ve gone international! We’ll let you freely explore the availability of the Netflix catalogue and its size in different parts of the world. Don’t take too long!

Multicultural Web

Have you ever been excited to learn that your favorite actor from La Casa de Papel also stars in the newly released Netflix series? Well, this happens often. We built a network of movies, where two movies are linked together if they share at least an actor. Notice how, in most cases, only movies of the same language share actors.

Words as a Tool

Naturally, with such diverse and multicultural content, the catalogue’s content had to be adapted to match every possible taste, mood and audience. Netflix is well known for its cheesy christmas and valentines movies. Does this show in movie plots? We had a look at short descriptions of movies, and noted the most identifying words during each month.

Family Friendliness

If you have kids, or a younger sibling or cousin, chances are they spend most of their time in front of a screen. Netflix is a great source of entertainment for younger children, and it should offer content appropriate for all ages. Take a look at the evolution of content depending on its intended audience.

Endless Content

You seem like you enjoy watching spicy dramas on Tuesdays, and spending summer mornings binge watching 90s sitcoms. You’re probably not alone. Netflix makes sure to release content adapted to its user’s taste, a taste that definitely changes throughout the year.
